This is the first post in a hike series I’ll be doing all summer featuring some of the hikes around Vancouver. One of my closest friends and I decided earlier this year that once a week this summer we would do a different hike because we both felt that our health and fitness have deteriorated during this year in school. Our goal is to make the Chief look like a walk in the park by the end of summer.
We decided to start out easy with Quarry Rock in Deep Cove, this hike took us 35 minutes both ways (keep in mind how out of shape we are) so it’s quite an easy and fast trail. Hiking in Vancouver has become so popular in the past couple of years, personally I think social media is responsible for this because everyone wants to prove how fit they are by posting photos of all the hikes they do. I’m not saying I’m not guilty of it, but basically the mentality is “pics or you didn’t hike it”. People can be so (hate to say it but) basic in a small city like Vancouver. Though I love this city and don’t ever plan on moving, I think that it can be hard to live in a place where everyone is connected. It’s hard to escape. Although, living somewhere so surrounded by nature gives plenty of opportunity to get out of your comfort zone. This summer I want to do as many outdoor activities as I can, I was a rockclimber for eight years and it makes me sad that because of school and work and other responsibilities I don’t have the time to be doing something I love. I really want to change that because I truly believe I’m happiest when I’m outdoors just enjoying what Vancouver has to offer.
